Glassnode & Free On-Chain Tools
Lesson by Uvin Vindula
You now understand the key on-chain metrics. But where do you actually access this data? The good news is that several excellent platforms offer free tiers with powerful analytics. You don't need to run a full Bitcoin node or parse raw blockchain data yourself. Let's explore the tools that will become part of your analytical toolkit.
1. Glassnode (glassnode.com)
Glassnode is considered the industry standard for on-chain analytics. It provides over 200 metrics across multiple blockchains, though its Bitcoin data is the most comprehensive.
Free Tier (Glassnode Studio):
- Access to a selection of key metrics including MVRV, SOPR, NUPL, and active addresses
- Data with a time delay (typically 24 hours behind real-time)
- Basic charting capabilities with the ability to overlay multiple metrics
- Weekly on-chain reports via their "The Week On-Chain" newsletter — highly recommended reading
How to use it: Create a free account at studio.glassnode.com. Navigate to the metric you want (e.g., "MVRV Ratio"), select the time range, and study the chart. Pay attention to how the metric behaved during previous bull and bear markets. Context is everything.
2. LookIntoBitcoin (lookintobitcoin.com)
Created by analyst Philip Swift, LookIntoBitcoin is arguably the most beginner-friendly on-chain analytics platform. It's completely free and focuses specifically on Bitcoin.
Key features:
- Bitcoin Rainbow Chart: A logarithmic regression band that color-codes price zones from "Fire Sale" to "Maximum Bubble Territory." While not predictive, it provides historical context for current price levels.
- Stock-to-Flow Chart: An interactive version of the S2F model with actual price overlay
- Pi Cycle Top Indicator: Uses moving average crossovers that have historically identified within 3 days of market cycle tops
- RHODL Ratio: Compares the value held by 1-week holders versus 1-2 year holders
- 200 Week Moving Average Heatmap: Shows how far price is from the 200-week MA, historically a major support level in bear markets
LookIntoBitcoin is the perfect starting point. Bookmark it and check it regularly to build your on-chain intuition.
3. Mempool.space (mempool.space)
While not an analytics platform per se, mempool.space is an essential tool for understanding Bitcoin's transaction layer in real-time:
- Mempool Visualization: See unconfirmed transactions waiting to be included in blocks, color-coded by fee rate
- Fee Estimation: Know exactly what fee to set for your transaction to be confirmed in the next block, next hour, or next day
- Block Explorer: Examine any block, transaction, or address in detail
- Lightning Network Stats: View Lightning Network capacity and channel data
4. Bitcoin Magazine Pro (bitcoinmagazinepro.com)
Bitcoin Magazine Pro offers a growing suite of free on-chain charts and analysis. Their dashboards present metrics in an accessible, visually appealing format, making it easier for newcomers to digest the data.
5. CryptoQuant (cryptoquant.com)
CryptoQuant specializes in exchange-related on-chain data. Their free tier provides:
- Exchange reserve data showing how much BTC is held on major exchanges
- Exchange inflow/outflow metrics
- Miner flow data
- Fund flow ratio — the proportion of exchange inflow relative to total on-chain volume
CryptoQuant is particularly useful for monitoring exchange flows, which we'll cover in depth in the next lesson.
Building Your On-Chain Dashboard
Here's a practical approach to getting started:
- Daily check: Glance at LookIntoBitcoin's Rainbow Chart and MVRV on Glassnode for a quick market temperature reading.
- Weekly review: Read Glassnode's "The Week On-Chain" newsletter and check CryptoQuant's exchange flow summary.
- Before any major decision: Check multiple metrics on Glassnode Studio for confluence. Look at MVRV, NUPL, SOPR, and exchange netflows together.
- Transaction check: Use mempool.space before sending any Bitcoin transaction to estimate appropriate fees.
Remember: tools are only as useful as your ability to interpret the data they present. Spend time studying how each metric behaved during previous market cycles. Pattern recognition comes from study and experience, not from any single tool or indicator.
Key Takeaways
