Choosing the Right Exchange
Lesson by Uvin Vindula
Not All Exchanges Are Created Equal
Now that you know the main way to buy Bitcoin in Sri Lanka is through a centralized exchange, the next question is: which exchange should you use?
There are hundreds of crypto exchanges in the world, but only a handful actually work well for Sri Lankans. The key factor? LKR support on P2P. If an exchange does not support Sri Lankan Rupee trading, it is basically useless for you unless you already have USD or another major currency.
Let us compare the top three exchanges that Sri Lankans commonly use.
The Big Three for Sri Lanka
| Feature | Binance | Bybit | KuCoin |
|---|---|---|---|
| LKR P2P Support | Yes — excellent liquidity | Yes — growing | Yes — limited |
| Trading Fees | 0.1% (spot) | 0.1% (spot) | 0.1% (spot) |
| KYC Required | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Beginner Friendly | Good | Very Good | Moderate |
| Security Track Record | Strong (SAFU fund) | Strong | Hacked in 2020 (recovered) |
| Mobile App | Excellent | Excellent | Good |
| Number of LKR Traders | Highest | Medium | Low |
Binance — The Top Pick for Sri Lanka
Binance is our recommended exchange for beginners in Sri Lanka, and here is why:
- Most LKR traders — This means you can always find someone to buy from or sell to. More traders = better prices.
- SAFU Fund — Binance maintains a $1 billion emergency insurance fund called SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users). If the exchange is hacked, this fund covers user losses.
- Comprehensive features — Spot trading, P2P, staking, savings, and more.
- Strong mobile app — The Binance app works smoothly on both Android and iOS.
The downside? Binance can feel overwhelming for complete beginners because there are so many features. But do not worry — in the next lesson, we will walk you through it step by step.
Bybit — The Runner-Up
Bybit has been growing quickly in Sri Lanka. Its interface is cleaner and arguably more beginner-friendly than Binance. The P2P section supports LKR and is easy to navigate. If you find Binance too complex, Bybit is a solid alternative.
However, Bybit has fewer LKR traders than Binance, which sometimes means slightly worse prices or longer wait times for your P2P order to be completed.
KuCoin — For the Adventurous
KuCoin is known for listing new coins early and having a huge selection of altcoins. It does support LKR P2P, but the liquidity is much lower. We would recommend KuCoin as a secondary exchange once you are more experienced — not as your first exchange.
What to Look for in an Exchange
When evaluating any exchange, ask yourself these questions:
- Does it support LKR via P2P? — This is non-negotiable for Sri Lankans.
- What are the fees? — Look at trading fees, withdrawal fees, and the P2P spread.
- Is it secure? — Check if it has 2FA, withdrawal whitelisting, and an insurance fund.
- Is it beginner-friendly? — Can you figure out how to buy Bitcoin within 5 minutes?
- What is its track record? — Has it been hacked? How did it handle it?
- Does it support withdrawal to external wallets? — You should always be able to move your Bitcoin off the exchange.
Exchanges to Avoid
Be cautious of:
- Unknown or new exchanges promising "zero fees" or "bonus Bitcoin"
- Exchanges that do not require KYC — while they seem convenient, they often lack consumer protections
- Any exchange promoted heavily on Telegram or WhatsApp groups — these are often scams targeting Sri Lankans
- Copy-cat exchanges — always type the URL directly, never click links from messages
Can You Use Multiple Exchanges?
Absolutely. Many experienced traders use Binance as their primary exchange and have accounts on Bybit or KuCoin as backups. This can be useful if one exchange has maintenance or if you find better prices elsewhere. However, as a beginner, start with one exchange, learn it well, and expand later.
