Understanding Altcoins
Lesson by Uvin Vindula
What Are Altcoins?
The term "altcoin" simply means any cryptocurrency that is not Bitcoin. The word comes from "alternative coin." Since Bitcoin's launch in 2009, thousands of altcoins have been created — each claiming to solve different problems or improve on Bitcoin's design.
As of 2026, there are over 20,000 cryptocurrencies listed on various exchanges. However, the vast majority of them hold little to no real value. Understanding the major ones — and how they differ from Bitcoin — is essential knowledge for any crypto-educated Sri Lankan.
Major Altcoins You Should Know
Ethereum (ETH)
Launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum introduced smart contracts — programmable agreements that execute automatically on the blockchain. Think of Ethereum as a global computer that anyone can build applications on. It powers most of DeFi (decentralized finance), NFTs, and thousands of tokens. Ethereum moved from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake in September 2022 (called "The Merge"), reducing its energy consumption by over 99%.
Binance Coin (BNB)
Created by Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange. BNB powers the BNB Smart Chain, a blockchain popular in Southeast Asia and developing countries because of its low transaction fees. Many Sri Lankan traders use BNB Chain for DeFi activities due to lower costs compared to Ethereum.
Solana (SOL)
Solana focuses on speed and low cost. It can process thousands of transactions per second at fractions of a cent. However, it has faced criticism for network outages and concerns about centralization. Solana became popular for meme coins and NFTs.
Cardano (ADA)
Founded by Charles Hoskinson (an Ethereum co-founder), Cardano takes a research-first approach. It develops features through peer-reviewed academic papers. While slower to ship features, it aims for higher security and sustainability. Cardano has significant communities in Africa and developing nations.
How to Evaluate an Altcoin
Before putting money into any altcoin, consider:
- What problem does it solve? — If it doesn't solve a real problem, it likely has no long-term value.
- Who is the team? — Anonymous teams are a red flag. Look for verifiable, public identities.
- Market capitalization — Larger market cap generally means more stability but less growth potential.
- How decentralized is it? — Projects controlled by a single company or small group are riskier.
- Real usage vs. hype — Check on-chain data. Are people actually using the network?
Altcoins vs. Bitcoin — Key Differences
| Factor | Bitcoin (BTC) | Altcoins |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Digital money / store of value | Varies widely |
| Supply | Fixed at 21 million | Often inflationary or variable |
| Decentralization | Most decentralized | Usually less decentralized |
| Track record | 17+ years, never hacked | Most are under 5 years old |
| Risk level | Volatile, but established | Generally higher risk |
The Risk Reality
Here's a hard truth: over 90% of altcoins that existed in 2017 are now worthless. Many projects that were once in the top 20 by market cap have disappeared entirely. While some altcoins have delivered massive returns, most have gone to zero.

Sri Lankan Context
Many Sri Lankan traders are drawn to cheaper altcoins thinking "if it goes to Bitcoin's price, I'll be rich." This is a fundamental misunderstanding of market capitalization. A coin priced at LKR 1 with 1 trillion supply is not "cheap" — it may already be overvalued. Always evaluate based on market cap, not individual coin price.
Key Takeaways
- •Altcoins are any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin — there are over 20,000 but most hold little value
- •Major altcoins like ETH, BNB, SOL, and ADA each serve different purposes and have different risk profiles
- •Over 90% of altcoins from previous cycles have gone to zero — always evaluate fundamentals before investing
- •Never confuse a low coin price with being "cheap" — market capitalization is what matters
- •Bitcoin remains the most decentralized and battle-tested cryptocurrency with the longest track record
