Setting Up Trust Wallet
Lesson by Uvin Vindula
Your First Personal Wallet — Step by Step
Trust Wallet is one of the most popular mobile crypto wallets in the world — and for good reason. It is free, easy to use, supports thousands of cryptocurrencies, and most importantly, it is non-custodial (you control your keys). It is the perfect first wallet for Sri Lankan beginners.
Let us set it up together.
Step 1: Download Trust Wallet
This step seems simple, but getting it wrong can be catastrophic.
- iPhone: Open the App Store and search "Trust Wallet." The developer should show as "Trust Wallet" with millions of downloads.
- Android: Open Google Play Store and search "Trust Wallet." Look for the official one by "Trust Wallet" with 10M+ downloads.
Warning: There are fake Trust Wallet apps that look identical but steal your seed phrase. Always verify:
- The developer name is correct
- It has millions of downloads and reviews
- Download from the official app store only — never from a link someone sends you
Step 2: Create a New Wallet
- Open Trust Wallet
- Tap "Create a new wallet"
- Read and accept the terms of service
- The app will now show you your 12-word seed phrase
STOP. This is the most important moment.
Before you do anything else:
- Get a pen and paper
- Write down all 12 words in the exact order shown
- Write them again on a second piece of paper
- Double-check every word and its spelling
Do not proceed until your seed phrase is written down correctly on paper.
Step 3: Verify Your Seed Phrase
Trust Wallet will ask you to verify your seed phrase by tapping the words in the correct order. This is to make sure you actually wrote them down and did not just skip past the screen.
- Tap the words in the exact order they were shown
- If you make a mistake, start over
- Once verified, your wallet is created
Step 4: Secure Your Wallet
Now set up additional security:
- Set a passcode or biometric lock — go to Settings → Security and enable fingerprint or face unlock. This prevents someone who picks up your phone from opening the wallet.
- Enable transaction signing — this requires your passcode for every transaction, not just when opening the app.
Important: the passcode protects the app on your phone. The seed phrase is the master recovery key. These are two different layers of security.
Step 5: Receive Bitcoin
Now let us get your Bitcoin receiving address so you can withdraw from Binance.
- On the main screen, find Bitcoin (BTC) in your coin list. If it is not visible, tap the toggle icon and search for "Bitcoin" to add it.
- Tap on Bitcoin
- Tap "Receive"
- You will see a QR code and a long alphanumeric address (starting with bc1 or 1 or 3)
- Tap "Copy" to copy the address
This is your Bitcoin receiving address. You can share it with anyone — it is like your email address. Anyone can send Bitcoin to it, but only you (with the private key) can spend it.
Step 6: Withdraw Bitcoin from Binance to Trust Wallet
Now follow the withdrawal steps from Module 3:
- In Binance, go to Wallet → Withdraw → BTC
- Select Bitcoin network
- Paste your Trust Wallet address
- Triple-check the address
- Send a small test amount first
- Wait for it to arrive (check the Trust Wallet app)
- Once confirmed, send the remaining amount
Useful Trust Wallet Tips
- Bookmark your own address — save it somewhere so you do not have to open the wallet every time
- Enable price alerts — Trust Wallet can notify you of significant price movements
- Explore the DApp browser (Android only) — but be very cautious with DApps until you are more experienced
- Keep the app updated — updates often include security patches
- Do not jailbreak/root your phone — this removes security protections that keep your wallet safe
What If My Phone Breaks or Is Lost?
This is exactly what your seed phrase is for. Simply:
- Get a new phone
- Download Trust Wallet again
- Choose "Import wallet" instead of "Create new wallet"
- Enter your 12-word seed phrase
- Your entire wallet and all funds will be restored
This is why we spent an entire lesson on seed phrases. They are your lifeline.
