Reality Check Time
If you are getting into Bitcoin because someone told you it will make you a millionaire overnight, I need to have an honest conversation with you. Bitcoin has been one of the best-performing assets in history, but it has also destroyed people who had unrealistic expectations.
What Bitcoin IS
- A long-term savings technology with strong historical returns
- An asset that can potentially 3-10x over a 4-year cycle
- The most decentralized and secure cryptocurrency
- A hedge against currency devaluation (especially relevant for Sri Lanka)
What Bitcoin IS NOT
- A get-rich-quick scheme
- A guaranteed path to wealth
- Going to 100x from current prices in a year
- A replacement for having a job, emergency fund, or financial plan
- Something that only goes up
Setting Realistic Return Expectations
| Time Horizon | Realistic Expectation | What Could Go Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | -50% to +100% (extreme range) | You could lose half your investment |
| 4 years | Historically positive, but not guaranteed | Could be a prolonged bear market |
| 10+ years | Strong historical returns if Bitcoin succeeds | Technology risk, regulatory risk |
The Danger of Moon Math
I see this constantly online: "If Bitcoin reaches $1 million, my $500 investment will be worth..." Stop. This kind of thinking leads to overinvestment, unrealistic timelines, and devastating disappointment.
A Better Way to Think About It
Instead of fantasizing about best-case scenarios, plan for multiple outcomes:
- Best case: Bitcoin 5-10x over the next cycle. Your investment grows substantially.
- Base case: Bitcoin 2-3x over the next cycle. Solid returns above inflation.
- Worst case: Bitcoin drops 80% and stays there for years. Can you handle this?
- Catastrophic case: Bitcoin goes to zero. Is your life still okay?
If you cannot handle the worst and catastrophic cases, you are invested too heavily.
What I Tell New Investors
I tell every person who asks me about Bitcoin: invest an amount that, if it 5x's, will make you smile, but if it goes to zero, will only make you shrug. That is the sweet spot.
