Crypto Meetups in Colombo: Where to Connect With Sri Lanka's Bitcoin Community
A guide to finding and attending crypto meetups in Colombo — the hub of Sri Lanka's growing Bitcoin and blockchain community.

Why Meetups Matter
In a country where crypto operates in a regulatory grey zone and scams are rampant, trust is the most valuable currency. And trust is built in person. That is why I believe crypto meetups are the single most important thing happening in the Sri Lankan crypto ecosystem. Not the trading, not the DeFi yields, not the price action — the people connecting face-to-face.
Regular Meetups in Colombo
Bitcoin Deepa Monthly Meetup
When: Last Saturday of every month, 3:00 PM
Where: Rotating venues in Colombo 3 and Colombo 7 — usually co-working spaces or cafes
Format: 30-minute educational presentation + 30-minute Q&A + open networking
Audience: All levels welcome, from complete beginners to experienced traders
Cost: Free
These are the meetups I personally organize through Bitcoin Deepa. We intentionally keep them beginner-friendly because the community grows by welcoming new people, not by being exclusive. Recent topics have included "Understanding the Bitcoin Halving," "P2P Trading Safety in Sri Lanka," and "Introduction to Self-Custody Wallets." Check our events calendar for upcoming topics.
Crypto Colombo Trading Nights
When: Bi-weekly, Friday evenings
Where: Various locations in Colombo
Format: Informal trading discussion, market analysis, and strategy sharing
Audience: Active traders (intermediate to advanced)
These are more informal gatherings focused on trading. People share their chart analysis, discuss market moves, and compare strategies. Good for active traders, but can be overwhelming for beginners.
Blockchain Developer Meetup
When: Monthly, dates vary
Where: Tech co-working spaces in Colombo
Format: Technical presentations, code demos, hackathon planning
Audience: Developers and technical builders
Sri Lanka's blockchain developer community is small but passionate. These meetups focus on Solidity development, smart contract security, Web3 architecture, and building on various L1 and L2 networks. If you are a developer interested in blockchain, this is where you want to be.
How to Get Started
If you have never attended a crypto meetup before, here is my advice:
Before the Meetup
- You do not need to know anything about crypto to attend. That is what the meetup is for
- Bring a notebook and pen — you will want to write down terms and concepts
- Download a wallet app like Trust Wallet beforehand — some meetups include live demos
- Have a few questions ready — there are no stupid questions at a good meetup
At the Meetup
- Introduce yourself. Say you are new. People will help you
- Do not feel pressured to invest in anything. Anyone who pressures you at a meetup is not someone you should trust
- Exchange contact information with people you connect with
- Listen more than you talk — the collective knowledge in the room is enormous
After the Meetup
- Follow up with the people you met
- Join the Telegram or Discord groups shared at the meetup
- Start with the educational resources mentioned
- Come back next month — relationships are built over time
Safety at Meetups
A word of caution that I share at every Bitcoin Deepa event:
- Never disclose how much crypto you hold. This makes you a target
- Be skeptical of anyone promoting a specific investment opportunity at a meetup
- Do not install apps or scan QR codes from people you just met
- Share knowledge, not private keys — ever
Meetups Outside Colombo
The crypto meetup scene outside Colombo is growing:
- Kandy: Quarterly meetups organized by the University of Peradeniya blockchain club
- Galle: Monthly informal gatherings, often with international digital nomads
- Jaffna: Emerging community with Tamil-language meetups being organized through Bitcoin Deepa
If there is no meetup in your area, consider starting one. Bitcoin Deepa provides resources and support for community members who want to organize local meetups. Reach out through our community page.
