Why Universities Matter for Crypto Adoption
I gave my first university talk on Bitcoin in 2022 at a time when most lecturers in Sri Lanka thought cryptocurrency was synonymous with gambling. The turnout shocked everyone — 300 students packed into a hall designed for 150. That day I realized something important: Sri Lankan youth are hungry for this knowledge, but nobody in the formal education system is feeding them.
Since then, Bitcoin Deepa has formalized university partnerships across the island, and the results have exceeded every expectation I had.
Our University Program
Bitcoin Deepa's university initiative is not about creating traders. It is about building a generation of Sri Lankans who understand decentralized technology deeply enough to build on it, regulate it wisely, or simply make informed personal financial decisions.
Guest Lecture Series
We deliver structured lecture series covering:
- History of money and why Bitcoin was created
- How blockchain technology works — explained for non-CS students too
- The Sri Lankan financial system and where crypto fits
- Careers in blockchain development, research, and policy
- Security fundamentals: protecting yourself in the crypto space
Blockchain Clubs
We help universities set up student-led blockchain clubs. These clubs organize their own meetups, hackathons, and study groups. Currently active at University of Moratuwa, University of Colombo, SLIIT, and University of Peradeniya. Each club gets access to Bitcoin Deepa's full educational resource library.
Research Support
Several final-year students have approached Bitcoin Deepa for thesis guidance on topics ranging from "CBDC implementation frameworks for Sri Lanka" to "Blockchain-based land registry systems for Sri Lankan provinces." We connect them with industry mentors and provide real-world data from our community work.
What Students Are Telling Us
"Before Bitcoin Deepa's workshop, I thought crypto was just trading candles on Binance. Now I understand it is an entire ecosystem of technology, economics, and social change. I am building my final year project on a blockchain-based supply chain for Sri Lankan tea exports."
— Computer Science student, University of Moratuwa
"My parents lost a significant portion of their savings during the 2022 crisis. Understanding Bitcoin and stablecoins through Bitcoin Deepa gave me tools to help my family diversify. I wish this education existed five years earlier."
— Economics student, University of Colombo
The Brain Drain Problem
Here is something that keeps me up at night: Sri Lanka is losing its brightest minds to emigration. After the 2022 crisis, thousands of skilled professionals left for Australia, Canada, the UK, and the Middle East. If we do not create opportunities in emerging tech sectors like blockchain, we will keep losing talent.
Bitcoin Deepa's university program is partly an attempt to show young Sri Lankans that you can build a career in this space without leaving the country. Remote blockchain development jobs pay in USD or crypto — you can earn a global salary while living in Colombo. We have seen graduates from our program land roles at international blockchain companies while staying in Sri Lanka. Explore career resources on our learning center.
Expanding to More Campuses
In 2026, we aim to establish Bitcoin Deepa chapters at:
- University of Jaffna — serving the Northern Province's Tamil-speaking student population
- Eastern University — reaching Batticaloa and Trincomalee
- Sabaragamuwa University — bringing blockchain education to Ratnapura district
- Open University of Sri Lanka — reaching distance-learning students across the island
If you are a university student or lecturer interested in hosting a Bitcoin Deepa chapter, reach out through our community page. The next generation of Sri Lankan tech leaders is sitting in lecture halls right now. Let us make sure they have the knowledge they need.
