Western Union vs Bitcoin: The Real Cost of Sending Money to Sri Lanka
I compared every cost — visible and hidden — of sending $500 to Sri Lanka via Western Union versus Bitcoin. The results speak for themselves.

A Fair Comparison
Western Union has been the default remittance channel for Sri Lankan families for decades. My own family used it when relatives sent money from the Middle East in the 1990s. But just because something is familiar does not mean it is the best option. I did a comprehensive cost comparison — and the numbers are stark.
The Test: Sending $500 From the UAE to Sri Lanka
I tracked the real costs of sending $500 through both channels, documenting every fee, every exchange rate, every hidden cost.
Western Union
| Cost Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Transfer fee | $9.99 |
| Exchange rate markup (vs mid-market) | ~3.5% ($17.50) |
| Total cost | ~$27.49 (5.5%) |
| Family receives | $472.51 equivalent in LKR |
| Time to receive | Minutes (cash pickup) to 1-3 days (bank) |
Bitcoin/USDT Remittance
| Cost Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Buy USDT spread (AED to USDT) | ~0.3% ($1.50) |
| Transfer fee (Binance internal) | $0 |
| Sell USDT spread (USDT to LKR P2P) | ~1.5% ($7.50) |
| Total cost | ~$9.00 (1.8%) |
| Family receives | $491 equivalent in LKR |
| Time to receive | 15-30 minutes |
The Difference: $18.49 Per Transaction
For a single $500 transfer, the crypto route saves $18.49. That does not sound life-changing until you multiply it:
- Monthly savings: $18.49 × 12 = $221.88 per year
- Over a 5-year overseas contract: $1,109.40
- For a family receiving from multiple members abroad: Potentially $500-1,000+ per year
In Sri Lankan rupees at current rates, annual savings of $222 translates to roughly 70,000 LKR. That covers several months of a child's tuition fees in many Sri Lankan towns.
The Hidden Costs of Western Union
The exchange rate markup is the cost most people miss. Western Union advertises a transfer fee of $9.99, which sounds reasonable. But the real money they make is on the exchange rate. The rate they offer is typically 3-4% worse than the mid-market rate. On a $500 transfer, that invisible markup costs more than the visible fee.
Where Western Union Still Wins
I want to be fair. Western Union has advantages that crypto currently does not match:
- Accessibility: Cash pickup at agent locations across Sri Lanka — no smartphone or bank account needed
- Simplicity: Walk in, show ID, collect cash. No apps, no wallets, no seed phrases
- Familiarity: Generations of Sri Lankans know and trust Western Union
- Legal clarity: Fully regulated and licensed in both sending and receiving countries
The Hybrid Approach
For many Sri Lankan families, the best approach might be a hybrid: use crypto remittances for the bulk of monthly transfers (to save on fees) and keep Western Union as a backup for emergencies or for family members who are not comfortable with crypto.
The critical ingredient is education. Workers abroad need to learn how to buy USDT. Family members at home need to learn how to sell it for LKR. This is exactly what Bitcoin Deepa's remittance workshops focus on — practical, step-by-step training for real families. See our remittance savings calculator and video tutorials.
