Using Crypto to Pay for International Services From Sri Lanka
Need to pay for hosting, software, or courses from Sri Lanka? When your bank blocks the card, crypto might be your only option. Here is how.

The International Payment Wall
Try paying for an AWS hosting subscription from Sri Lanka with a local bank card. Or a Udemy course. Or a domain renewal. If you are lucky, it works. If you are not — and many Sri Lankans are not — your card gets declined, your payment fails, and you are stuck.
Sri Lanka's capital controls and the general skittishness of local banks about international transactions create real problems for anyone trying to access global digital services. This is not a luxury complaint — for developers, students, and small businesses, access to international services is essential.
Where Crypto Fills the Gap
Crypto provides a workaround for Sri Lankans locked out of international payments:
Crypto Debit Cards
Services like Binance Card (available in some regions) allow you to load crypto and spend it like a regular Visa/Mastercard. The crypto is converted to fiat at the point of sale. Availability for Sri Lankan users varies — check current eligibility on each platform.
Direct Crypto Payment
Many international services now accept crypto directly:
- Hosting: Namecheap, Hostinger, and several VPS providers accept Bitcoin
- VPN services: Most major VPN providers accept crypto
- Software subscriptions: Various SaaS tools accept Bitcoin or USDT
- Education: Some online course platforms accept crypto
Gift Card Bridge
Buy gift cards with crypto on platforms like Bitrefill or CoinGate. You can get Amazon, Google Play, Apple, Netflix, Spotify, and dozens of other gift cards paid for with Bitcoin or USDT. This effectively lets you use crypto to pay for any service these platforms cover.
Step-by-Step: Paying for a Service With Crypto
Let us say you need to pay $50 for annual domain registration:
- Choose a registrar that accepts Bitcoin (Namecheap, for example)
- At checkout, select Bitcoin/crypto payment
- A payment address and amount will be displayed
- Send the exact amount from your wallet
- Wait for blockchain confirmation (usually 10-30 minutes for Bitcoin)
- Payment confirmed, service activated
The Gift Card Method
For services that do not accept crypto directly:
- Go to Bitrefill or CoinGate
- Browse available gift cards
- Purchase with Bitcoin, USDT, or Lightning Network
- Receive gift card code instantly
- Redeem on the service you need
This works for Google Workspace, Apple services, Amazon purchases, gaming platforms, and much more. Sri Lankan developers use this method regularly for tools and services their bank cards cannot access.
Cost Comparison
| Method | Fee | Success Rate for SL | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sri Lankan bank card (intl) | 3-4% | 60-70% | Instant if approved |
| Crypto direct payment | Network fee only | 100% | 10-30 min |
| Gift card bridge | 2-5% markup | 100% | Instant |
| Ask friend abroad to pay | Awkwardness | Depends on friendship | Varies |
That last row is half joking, but many Sri Lankans genuinely rely on friends and relatives abroad to make international payments for them. Crypto removes that dependency entirely. For more payment solutions, explore our tools page and exchange guide.
