Running a Lightning Node in Sri Lanka
I've been running a Lightning node from Sri Lanka for a while now, and I want to share the real experience — the good, the bad, and the "why is my internet down again" moments. If you're thinking about running a node here, this is the honest guide you need.
My Hardware Setup
- Device: Raspberry Pi 4 (8GB RAM) — costs about LKR 35,000-45,000
- Storage: 1TB SSD (Samsung T7) — essential, don't use an SD card for the blockchain
- UPS: A small UPS is mandatory in Sri Lanka. Power cuts will corrupt your channel database
- Internet: SLT fiber, 100 Mbps — adequate but not always stable
Software Stack
I run Umbrel as the node OS. It packages Bitcoin Core + LND with a beautiful web interface. Alternatives include Start9, RaspiBlitz, and myNode. For Sri Lankan beginners, Umbrel is the easiest path.
Initial Sync
The Bitcoin blockchain is over 550 GB. On Sri Lankan internet, initial block download (IBD) took me about 4-5 days. Be patient. Once synced, ongoing bandwidth is minimal — maybe 20-30 GB per month.
The Sri Lankan Challenges
Power Reliability
This is the biggest issue. Unexpected shutdowns can corrupt LND's channel database. Solutions:
- Use a UPS (even a cheap one gives you 15-30 minutes)
- Enable Static Channel Backups (SCB) — automatically backs up channel state to a file
- Set up SCB auto-upload to Google Drive or Telegram via a script
Internet Stability
If your node goes offline, you can't route payments and your channels might force-close after extended downtime. I recommend SLT fiber over Dialog 4G for stability. If possible, have a backup mobile hotspot.
IP Issues
Most Sri Lankan ISPs use CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT), meaning you don't get a public IP. Solutions:
- Tor: Run your node as a Tor hidden service (Umbrel does this by default)
- VPN with port forwarding: Services like Mullvad offer port forwarding
- Hybrid mode: Tor for node identity, clearnet for better latency via tunneling
Channel Strategy
With Sri Lankan internet latency, focus on fewer, larger channels rather than many small ones. I maintain 5-8 channels with 1-5M sats each, connected to major routing nodes in Asia and Europe.
Costs Breakdown
| Item | Cost (LKR) |
|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 4 8GB | ~40,000 |
| 1TB SSD | ~25,000 |
| UPS | ~15,000 |
| Monthly electricity | ~500 |
| Monthly internet (shared) | ~1,000 |
Total setup: roughly LKR 80,000 (about $250). Monthly running cost: LKR 1,500. That's your sovereign Lightning infrastructure.
