On-Chain Analysis for Beginners: Understanding the MVRV Ratio
The MVRV ratio is one of the most powerful on-chain metrics for understanding whether Bitcoin is overvalued or undervalued. Here is how to read it.

What Is On-Chain Analysis?
Unlike traditional markets where data is mostly private, Bitcoin's blockchain is completely transparent. Every transaction ever made is public. On-chain analysis means examining this blockchain data to understand market conditions, investor behavior, and potential price trends.
It is like having X-ray vision into the market. And the MVRV ratio is one of the best tools in this toolkit.
Understanding the MVRV Ratio
MVRV stands for Market Value to Realized Value. It compares two things:
- Market Value (MV): The current price of Bitcoin multiplied by the total supply — essentially the market cap
- Realized Value (RV): Instead of using the current price, each Bitcoin is valued at the price it was LAST moved on-chain
The Formula
MVRV = Market Cap / Realized Cap
How to Interpret MVRV
| MVRV Range | Interpretation | Historical Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Below 1.0 | Market is undervalued — average holder is at a loss | Historically excellent buying opportunities |
| 1.0 - 2.0 | Market in recovery or early bull phase | Still generally good for accumulation |
| 2.0 - 3.0 | Market heating up — average holder in significant profit | Caution zone — consider taking some profits |
| Above 3.5 | Market likely overheated — euphoria zone | Historically near cycle tops |
Why MVRV Works
The genius of MVRV is that it tells you whether the average investor is in profit or loss. When the average investor is in extreme profit (high MVRV), there is a strong incentive to sell, which creates selling pressure. When the average investor is at a loss (low MVRV), most people who wanted to sell already have, reducing selling pressure.
Historical Accuracy
- 2017 top: MVRV reached approximately 4.5 before the crash
- 2018 bottom: MVRV dropped below 1.0 — incredible buying opportunity
- 2021 top: MVRV reached approximately 3.5-4.0
- 2022 bottom: MVRV again dropped near 1.0
How I Use MVRV
I check the MVRV ratio monthly as part of my portfolio review. It is NOT a timing tool — I do not buy or sell based solely on MVRV. But it provides important context:
- If MVRV is below 1.5: I am more aggressive with my DCA and may add extra purchases
- If MVRV is between 1.5-2.5: Normal DCA continues
- If MVRV is above 3.0: I start thinking about my profit-taking plan
Where to Find MVRV Data
Several free and paid platforms track MVRV. Look for on-chain analytics sites that provide historical MVRV charts. Some popular options include Glassnode, LookIntoBitcoin, and CryptoQuant.
