What Is NUPL?
NUPL stands for Net Unrealized Profit/Loss. It measures the total amount of profit or loss that exists in Bitcoin holders' positions that have NOT been sold (hence "unrealized"). Think of it as a snapshot of how the entire market is feeling based on where they bought.
How NUPL Works
For every Bitcoin on the blockchain, we know the price at which it last moved. By comparing that price to the current market price, we can calculate whether the holder is in profit or loss. NUPL aggregates this across all Bitcoin:
NUPL = (Market Cap - Realized Cap) / Market Cap
The NUPL Zones
| NUPL Range | Zone Name | Market Sentiment | Typical Price Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Below 0 | Capitulation | Extreme fear, most holders at a loss | Bear market bottom zone |
| 0 to 0.25 | Hope/Fear | Market recovering, cautious optimism | Early recovery phase |
| 0.25 to 0.50 | Optimism | Growing confidence, holders in profit | Bull market building |
| 0.50 to 0.75 | Belief/Greed | Strong conviction, significant unrealized gains | Bull market maturing |
| Above 0.75 | Euphoria | Extreme greed, most at large profit | Near cycle top — danger zone |
Why This Matters for Your Investment
When I see NUPL in the capitulation zone, I know that the market has squeezed out most of the weak hands. Most people who were going to panic sell have already sold. This is historically one of the best times to be accumulating.
Conversely, when NUPL enters the euphoria zone, almost everyone is sitting on huge unrealized gains. The temptation to take profits becomes overwhelming, and selling pressure builds. This is when I start executing my profit-taking plan.
Historical NUPL Signals
- Dec 2018: NUPL dropped below 0 (capitulation). Bitcoin was at ~$3,200. It recovered to $69,000 within 3 years.
- Nov 2021: NUPL reached 0.73 (near euphoria). Bitcoin was at ~$69,000. It then crashed to $15,500.
- Nov 2022: NUPL dropped near 0 again after FTX collapse. Another capitulation, another buying opportunity.
How I Incorporate NUPL
NUPL is part of my monthly dashboard alongside MVRV and other metrics:
- NUPL below 0.25: Maximum accumulation mode. DCA plus extra purchases.
- NUPL 0.25-0.50: Normal DCA continues. The market is healthy.
- NUPL 0.50-0.75: DCA continues but I review my profit-taking levels.
- NUPL above 0.75: Stop buying. Start executing profit-taking plan.
Limitations of NUPL
No single metric is a crystal ball. NUPL can stay in extreme zones longer than expected. Use it as one input among many, not as a standalone trading signal.
