Lightning Service Providers Explained
Here's a dirty secret about Lightning: running your own node and managing channels is hard. Liquidity management, channel balancing, watchtower monitoring — it's a full-time job. This is where LSPs come in.
What is an LSP?
An LSP provides Lightning infrastructure to end users and wallets. Think of them as the ISPs of Lightning — they handle networking complexity so you can just send sats.
- Inbound liquidity: Opening channels TO you so you can receive
- Just-in-time channels: Opening channels on-demand when a payment arrives
- Submarine swaps: Converting between on-chain and Lightning
How JIT Channels Work
Someone sends you 50,000 sats but you don't have a channel. The LSP intercepts the payment, opens a channel to you, and forwards the payment — all atomically. You see the payment in seconds. The LSP recoups cost through small fees (0.4-1% on first receive).
Major LSPs
- ACINQ (Phoenix): Pioneers of the splicing-based LSP model
- Breez Technology: Open-source LSP using Breez SDK and Greenlight
- Voltage: LSP infrastructure for businesses
- Olympus by Zeus: Emerging LSP in the Zeus ecosystem
The LSPS Specification
The emerging LSPS standard (LSPS1 through LSPS4) defines how wallets and LSPs communicate about channel opens and liquidity purchases. This will let wallets switch between LSPs — creating competition and better prices.
Why This Matters for Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka, every satoshi counts. LSPs providing cheap, reliable liquidity will be the backbone of Lightning adoption here. Imagine a tuk-tuk driver in Kandy accepting Lightning through a simple app — the driver doesn't care about channels. The LSP handles everything.
