Step 1: Unboxing and Verification
CRITICAL: Only buy Ledger devices from the official Ledger website or authorized resellers. Never buy from random Amazon/eBay sellers — devices may be tampered with.
- Check the box for tamper-evident seal
- The device should come with: Ledger device, USB cable, recovery sheet(s), getting started card
- There should be NO pre-filled recovery phrases — if you find words already written on the recovery sheets, the device is compromised. Return it immediately.
Step 2: Install Ledger Live
- Visit ledger.com/ledger-live
- Download Ledger Live for your operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android)
- Install and launch the application
- Click "Get Started"
- Select your Ledger model
- Choose "Set up as new device"
Step 3: Initialize Your Ledger
- Connect your Ledger to your computer via USB
- Press both buttons to begin setup
- Create a 4-8 digit PIN code on the device — press left/right to change digits, both buttons to confirm
- The device will generate and display your 24-word recovery phrase
- Write each word on the recovery sheets provided — in order
- Confirm the phrase by selecting requested words on the device
Step 4: Install Apps
Each cryptocurrency needs its own app on the Ledger:
- In Ledger Live, go to My Ledger (or Manager)
- Your Ledger will ask you to allow the connection — confirm on the device
- Browse the app catalog
- Click Install next to Bitcoin, Ethereum, or any coin you want to store
- The app downloads to your Ledger device
Step 5: Create Accounts
- In Ledger Live, click Accounts > Add Account
- Select the cryptocurrency
- Your Ledger will generate the account
- Name the account (e.g., "Bitcoin Savings")
- Click Add Account
Step 6: Receive Crypto
- Click Receive in Ledger Live
- Select the account to receive into
- Ledger Live will display an address
- VERIFY the address on your Ledger device screen — this ensures no malware has changed the address
- Only after verifying on the device, share the address with the sender
Step 7: Send Crypto
- Click Send in Ledger Live
- Select the account to send from
- Enter the recipient's address and amount
- Choose the fee level (slow, medium, fast)
- Click Continue
- Verify all details on your Ledger device screen — address, amount, fees
- Press both buttons on the Ledger to confirm the transaction
Using Ledger with MetaMask
For DeFi and Web3, connect your Ledger to MetaMask:
- Install the Ethereum app on your Ledger
- Enable "Blind Signing" in the Ethereum app settings on the device
- In MetaMask, go to Settings > Add Hardware Wallet > Ledger
- Select an account to import
- All MetaMask transactions now require Ledger confirmation
Firmware Updates
Keep your Ledger firmware updated for security patches:
- Open Ledger Live and connect your device
- If an update is available, you'll see a notification
- Follow the on-screen instructions to update
- Make sure you have your recovery phrase before updating — in rare cases, updates can reset the device
Security Best Practices
- Always verify addresses on the device screen — never trust only what's on your computer
- Use a strong PIN — after 3 wrong attempts, the device resets
- Store recovery phrase offline in multiple secure locations
- Consider a metal backup for the seed phrase
- Enable passphrase (25th word) for additional security
- Never enter your seed phrase on a computer — the Ledger device is the only place
Troubleshooting
- Device not recognized: Try a different USB cable or port. Install USB drivers if on Windows.
- Ledger Live won't connect: Close other wallet software, update Ledger Live and firmware
- Transaction fails: Ensure the correct app is open on the Ledger
- "Insufficient funds": Make sure you account for network fees
Ordering a Ledger in Sri Lanka
- Order directly from ledger.com — they ship internationally
- Shipping to Sri Lanka takes approximately 2-4 weeks
- Be prepared for customs duties on the import
- Do NOT buy from local unofficial resellers unless you can verify the device is sealed and genuine
