DCA Into Bitcoin With Small Amounts: Every Satoshi Counts
You do not need thousands of dollars to start investing in Bitcoin. Even small weekly amounts can build serious wealth over time.

You Do Not Need to Be Rich to Start
One of the biggest misconceptions I fight against in Sri Lanka is the idea that you need a lot of money to invest in Bitcoin. "Bitcoin is too expensive, I cannot afford it" — I hear this every single week. And every time, I explain the same thing: you do not buy a whole Bitcoin.
Understanding Satoshis
One Bitcoin is divisible into 100,000,000 units called satoshis (or "sats"). Think of it like this:
- 1 Rupee = 100 cents
- 1 Bitcoin = 100,000,000 satoshis
You can buy as little as a few hundred rupees worth of Bitcoin. At current prices, even 1,000 LKR gets you thousands of satoshis. That is a real start.
Small Amount DCA Scenarios
| Weekly Investment | Monthly Total | Yearly Total | 5-Year Total Invested |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 LKR (~$3) | 4,000 LKR | 52,000 LKR | 260,000 LKR |
| 2,500 LKR (~$8) | 10,000 LKR | 130,000 LKR | 650,000 LKR |
| 5,000 LKR (~$16) | 20,000 LKR | 260,000 LKR | 1,300,000 LKR |
These amounts might seem small, but remember: Bitcoin has averaged over 100% annual returns over any 4-year period historically. Small consistent amounts plus time plus compounding growth can lead to life-changing results.
The Latte Analogy
I used to spend about 800 LKR per day on coffee and snacks. That is 5,600 LKR per week. I did not give up all of it, but redirecting even half — 2,800 LKR per week — into Bitcoin has been one of the best financial decisions I have ever made.
Where to Find Your DCA Money
- Skip one restaurant meal per week
- Reduce mobile data plan to the next tier down
- Cancel one subscription you rarely use
- Set aside loose change digitally
The Fee Problem With Small Amounts
One real concern with small DCA amounts is fees eating into your investment. If you are investing 1,000 LKR and paying 2% in fees, that is 20 LKR lost immediately. Here is how to minimize this:
- Look for exchanges with low minimum order sizes and flat fees
- Consider accumulating weekly and buying bi-weekly or monthly to reduce transaction count
- Batch your withdrawals to self-custody
