Bitcoin Sri Lanka for Sinhala Speakers: Simple English Introduction
By Uvin Vindula (IAMUVIN) — Updated March 2026
This guide is written in simple English for Sinhala-speaking Sri Lankans who are new to Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. We avoid complex technical jargon and explain everything using familiar, everyday concepts. If you have heard about Bitcoin but find most guides confusing, this article is for you.
What Is Bitcoin? (Simple Explanation)
Think of Bitcoin as digital money — like the money in your bank account, but it does not belong to any bank or government. Just like you can send money through your phone using the Commercial Bank app or Sampath Vishwa, you can send Bitcoin to anyone in the world through the internet. The difference is that no bank controls Bitcoin — it runs on a network of computers around the world.
Bitcoin was created in 2009 by someone using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Nobody knows who this person really is, but the system they created has been running perfectly for over 16 years. Today, one Bitcoin is worth about 28-29 million LKR (lakhs twenty-eight to twenty-nine — or about $90,000 USD).
Important: You do not need to buy one whole Bitcoin. You can buy a small piece — just like you can buy 100 grams of rice instead of a whole sack. You can start with as little as 5,000 LKR.
Why Do People Buy Bitcoin?
People in Sri Lanka buy Bitcoin for several reasons:
- To protect their savings from LKR losing value: Remember how prices went up during the 2022 crisis? The rupee lost value, meaning your savings could buy less. Bitcoin, over long periods, has increased in value. Some people keep a small amount in Bitcoin as protection
- To receive money from abroad: If someone in a foreign country wants to send you money, they can send Bitcoin quickly and cheaply. This can be faster and cheaper than Western Union or bank transfers
- To invest: Some people buy Bitcoin hoping its price will go up over time, similar to buying land or gold
- To pay for services online: Some international services accept Bitcoin as payment
Is Bitcoin Safe? (Honest Answer)
Bitcoin itself is safe — the technology has never been broken. But there are risks:
- Price goes up and down: If you buy Bitcoin for 100,000 LKR, it could be worth 80,000 LKR next week or 120,000 LKR. It changes a lot. Only put in money you can afford to lose
- Scammers: Many people in Sri Lanka have lost money to scammers who promise "guaranteed profits" from Bitcoin. Real Bitcoin does NOT guarantee profits. Anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to cheat you
- If you lose your password (seed phrase), you lose your Bitcoin: There is no bank to call and recover it. This is why keeping your passwords safe is very important
How to Buy Bitcoin in Sri Lanka (Simple Steps)
Here is the simplest way for a Sri Lankan to buy Bitcoin:
Step 1: Download Binance App
Go to your phone's App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android). Search for "Binance" and download the official app. Binance is the most popular crypto app used by Sri Lankans.
Step 2: Create an Account
Open the app and tap "Register." Enter your email address and create a password. Verify your email with the code they send.
Step 3: Verify Your Identity (KYC)
Binance needs to verify who you are. You will need your NIC (Jathika Handhuna Patha / National Identity Card). Take clear photos of the front and back. Take a selfie. This process is similar to opening a bank account — they need to verify your identity. It usually takes a few hours to get approved.
Step 4: Buy Bitcoin Using Your Bank Account
This is the most important step. Since you cannot directly send LKR to Binance, you will use what is called "P2P trading." Think of it as a marketplace where Sri Lankans sell Bitcoin to each other:
- Go to P2P section in the Binance app
- Tap "Buy" and select "BTC" (Bitcoin)
- Make sure the currency shows "LKR"
- You will see a list of people selling Bitcoin for LKR
- Choose a seller (pick someone with a green badge and high percentage)
- Enter how much LKR you want to spend (e.g., 10,000 LKR)
- The app will show you the seller's bank details
- Open your bank app (BOC, Commercial Bank, Sampath, etc.) and transfer the money to the seller
- Go back to Binance and confirm you paid
- The seller checks their bank, then sends you the Bitcoin through Binance
The whole process takes about 10-20 minutes. Binance holds the Bitcoin safely until the seller confirms your payment, so you are protected.
Important Words You Should Know

- Crypto / Cryptocurrency: A general term for all digital money (Bitcoin is one type, there are thousands of others)
- USDT: A type of crypto that always equals approximately $1 USD. Many Sri Lankans buy this first
- Wallet: Where you keep your Bitcoin — like a digital purse. Can be an app on your phone
- P2P: Person-to-person. Buying directly from another person through a platform
- LKR: Sri Lankan Rupees — our local currency
- KYC: "Know Your Customer" — identity verification. You show your NIC to prove who you are

- Scam: A trick to steal your money. Very common in crypto in Sri Lanka
Common Scams to Watch Out For
These scams are very common in Sri Lanka. Please be careful:
- "Send me 50,000 LKR and I will give you 100,000 LKR worth of Bitcoin" — This is always a scam. Nobody gives free money
- "Invest in our Bitcoin trading group for guaranteed 50% monthly returns" — This is a Ponzi scheme. The money comes from new investors, and everyone eventually loses
- "I am a Binance agent, give me your password to fix your account" — Binance does not have agents on WhatsApp or Telegram. Never share your password
- "Click this link to claim free Bitcoin" — This is phishing. The link will steal your account information
How Much Should You Start With?
Start small. Very small. Here is our advice:
- Begin with 5,000-10,000 LKR to learn how the process works
- Do not put your savings, household money, or borrowed money into Bitcoin
- Only use money you are completely okay with losing
- As you learn more and become comfortable, you can slowly add more
