Should you go all-in on Bitcoin or spread across multiple cryptocurrencies? I present both sides of this heated debate with honesty.

The Debate That Divides Crypto
This is one of the most polarizing topics in the crypto space: should you only hold Bitcoin, or should you diversify into other cryptocurrencies? There are smart people on both sides of this debate, and I want to give you an honest assessment so you can decide for yourself.
The Case for Bitcoin Only
Arguments From the Bitcoin Maximalists
- Survival rate: Most altcoins from 2017 are dead. Bitcoin has survived every cycle.
- Simplicity: One asset to understand, track, and secure
- True decentralization: Bitcoin is the only crypto that truly has no leader or central point of failure
- Risk-adjusted returns: When you account for the risk of altcoins going to zero, Bitcoin's risk-adjusted returns are hard to beat
- Lindy Effect: The longer something survives, the longer it is likely to survive
The Case for Diversification
Arguments From the Multi-Coin Camp
- Higher potential returns: Some altcoins outperform Bitcoin during bull markets by 10-50x
- Different use cases: Ethereum for smart contracts, stablecoins for payments, etc.
- Hedging risk: Traditional finance says diversification reduces risk
- Innovation exposure: New technologies may create significant value
What the Data Actually Shows
| Metric | Bitcoin Only | Diversified (BTC + Top Alts) |
|---|---|---|
| 2017-2018 Cycle Return | Strong positive | Higher peak, but devastating crash |
| 2020-2022 Cycle Return | Solid positive | Mixed — some alts outperformed, most did not |
| Recovery from Bear Market | Faster | Many alts never recovered |
| Stress Level | Low | High — monitoring multiple assets |
My Personal Position
I lean heavily toward Bitcoin. Here is why: in traditional markets, diversification works because you are spreading across different industries and asset classes. In crypto, most altcoins are highly correlated with Bitcoin — they go up when Bitcoin goes up and crash harder when Bitcoin crashes. So you are not really diversifying risk; you are just adding more volatility.
That said, I do hold a small allocation to Ethereum because I believe in the technology. But it is a small percentage, and I treat it as speculation, not investment.
My Advice for Sri Lankan Investors
If you are new, start with 100% Bitcoin. After at least one full market cycle (4 years), you will understand the market well enough to make an informed decision about diversification. Until then, the simplest approach is the safest.
