How to Build a Bitcoin-First Portfolio Allocation Strategy
Your crypto portfolio should start with Bitcoin. Here is how I think about allocation and why Bitcoin deserves the largest share.

Bitcoin First: The Foundation of Your Portfolio
When people ask me how to allocate their crypto portfolio, my answer always starts the same way: Bitcoin first. Before you touch any altcoin, before you chase any trending token, build a solid Bitcoin foundation.
I am not saying this because I am a "Bitcoin maximalist" — I am saying it because I have watched too many Sri Lankans lose their savings chasing altcoins while ignoring the most proven asset in the entire crypto space.
Why Bitcoin Deserves the Largest Allocation
- Track Record: 15+ years of survival through multiple cycles, regulatory attacks, and market crashes
- Liquidity: The most liquid cryptocurrency by far — you can buy or sell billions without significantly moving the price
- Decentralization: No CEO, no foundation that can rug pull, no single point of failure
- Institutional Adoption: ETFs, corporate treasuries, sovereign wealth funds — the big money is in Bitcoin
- Network Effect: The most secure, most distributed, most recognized cryptocurrency
Portfolio Allocation Models
Conservative (My Recommendation for Most People)
| Asset | Allocation |
|---|---|
| Bitcoin | 80-100% |
| Ethereum | 0-15% |
| Other | 0-5% |
Moderate
| Asset | Allocation |
|---|---|
| Bitcoin | 60-70% |
| Ethereum | 15-25% |
| Large Cap Alts | 5-15% |
Aggressive (Higher Risk)
| Asset | Allocation |
|---|---|
| Bitcoin | 40-50% |
| Ethereum | 20-30% |
| Large Cap Alts | 10-15% |
| Small Cap / DeFi | 5-10% |
The Mistake Most Beginners Make
I have seen this pattern hundreds of times: someone new to crypto sees a tweet about an altcoin that went 100x, so they skip Bitcoin entirely and put everything into random small-cap tokens. Within a year, most of those tokens are down 90% or dead. Meanwhile, Bitcoin is at new all-time highs.
The excitement of altcoins is a trap for beginners. Build your Bitcoin foundation first, learn the market for at least one full cycle, and only then consider diversifying.
How to Decide Your Allocation
Ask yourself these questions:
- How much time can I dedicate to research? (Less time = more Bitcoin)
- How long is my time horizon? (Shorter = more Bitcoin)
- How would I handle a 90% loss in an altcoin? (Cannot handle it = more Bitcoin)
- Do I understand the technology of the altcoin I want to buy? (No = stick with Bitcoin)
