Bitcoin Deepa: Bringing Bitcoin Education to Every Village in Sri Lanka
Bitcoin Deepa is my grassroots initiative to make Bitcoin knowledge accessible to every Sri Lankan, from Colombo boardrooms to Anuradhapura paddy fields.

Why I Started Bitcoin Deepa
I still remember the day in 2022 when the rupee was in free fall, fuel queues stretched for kilometers, and my neighbor — a retired school principal — asked me if this "Bitcoin thing" could save his pension. That question haunted me. Not because I did not have an answer, but because millions of Sri Lankans were asking the same thing and nobody was answering them in Sinhala or Tamil.
That is how Bitcoin Deepa was born. "Deepa" means "island" in Sinhala — and the mission is simple: make Bitcoin education reach every corner of this island. Not just the English-speaking tech crowd in Colombo, but the three-wheel driver in Matara, the tea estate worker in Nuwara Eliya, the fisherman in Trincomalee.
What Bitcoin Deepa Actually Does
Bitcoin Deepa is not a company. It is not a token project. It is a grassroots education movement. Here is what we do on the ground:
- Local-language workshops: We run free Bitcoin education sessions in Sinhala and Tamil across all nine provinces
- Merchant onboarding: We help small businesses understand and optionally accept Bitcoin payments
- Community meetups: Monthly gatherings where newcomers can ask questions without judgment
- Digital content: Free Sinhala and Tamil guides, videos, and infographics on our learning center
- University outreach: Partnering with universities to introduce Bitcoin and blockchain concepts
The Problem We Are Solving
Sri Lanka has a 92% literacy rate, but our financial literacy — especially around digital assets — is shockingly low. When the 2022 crisis hit, people lost faith in the banking system almost overnight. ATMs ran dry. The rupee crashed from 200 to over 360 against the dollar. People were desperate for alternatives but had zero understanding of what those alternatives looked like.
Scammers filled that vacuum. Ponzi schemes disguised as "crypto investments" swept through WhatsApp groups. Thousands of Sri Lankans lost money to fraudulent schemes because they had no foundational knowledge to distinguish a scam from a legitimate opportunity. Bitcoin Deepa exists to fill that knowledge gap before the scammers do.
Education First, Always
I want to be crystal clear about something: Bitcoin Deepa does not sell anything. We do not promote any exchange, any token, or any investment scheme. We teach people how money works, how Bitcoin works, and how to protect themselves. That is it. The decision to buy, hold, or ignore Bitcoin is entirely theirs. Check our tools page for unbiased resources.
Our Progress So Far
Since launching in late 2023, Bitcoin Deepa has:
- Conducted over 80 workshops across 7 provinces
- Reached approximately 5,000 Sri Lankans with in-person education
- Published 200+ pieces of educational content in Sinhala
- Built a volunteer network of 45 community educators
- Partnered with 3 universities for blockchain awareness programs
What Comes Next
The next phase of Bitcoin Deepa focuses on three pillars:
1. Train the Trainers
We cannot scale if it is just me running workshops. We are building a certified educator program where passionate community members learn to teach Bitcoin fundamentals in their own districts. The goal is to have at least one Bitcoin Deepa educator in every district by end of 2026.
2. Merchant Education Network
Understanding Bitcoin is one thing. Using it in daily commerce is another. We are working with small business owners — from boutique shops in Galle Fort to fruit stalls in Pettah — to help them understand crypto payments. Not forcing adoption, but removing the knowledge barrier.
3. Policy Engagement
I have been vocal about the need for Sri Lanka to develop a sensible regulatory framework for crypto. Through Bitcoin Deepa, we plan to engage with policymakers, provide research, and advocate for regulations that protect consumers without killing innovation. Read more about our regulatory analysis on the crypto Sri Lanka page.
How You Can Help
Bitcoin Deepa runs entirely on volunteer effort and community support. If you believe in financial education for Sri Lanka, here is how you can contribute:
- Volunteer as a community educator in your district
- Translate content into Tamil or other languages
- Host a meetup in your area
- Share our educational content with your networks
The 2022 crisis taught us a brutal lesson: depending entirely on a centralized system controlled by politicians is dangerous. Bitcoin Deepa is not about making everyone buy Bitcoin. It is about making sure every Sri Lankan has the knowledge to make informed financial decisions in a rapidly changing world.
